Thunder egg agate is formed in the gas pockets of rhyolite lava, and is found all over the world. These pockets act as molds, with water percolating through the porous rock carrying in silica and lining the deposits, first with a darker matrix material and then with an inner core of agate or chalcedony. Color variations are the result of different minerals left by water passing through the soil and rock.
